Hayes & Yeading United made it a very happy birthday for gaffer Paul Hughes as his side went nap against Harrow Borough claiming the clubs first ever Middlesex Senior Cup in a keenly contested game at The Powerday Stadium. With United still having several players unavailable for various reasons it gave the manager a chance to bring under 18s prospect Hikram Olaiya into the squad for this prestigious cup final, the youngster making his debut late on in the game. Harrow were quickly out of the blocks and created an opening in just the third minute when striker Anointed Chukwu collected the ball 20 yards from the United goal and tried his luck from range only to be denied a chance to test Jack Smith in the United goal as Paul Field managed to deflect his effort away from goal. United controversially had an opening "goal" ruled out in the sixteenth minute when a 20 yard Hassan Jalloh shot appeared to deflect off a defender thus wrongfooting Jacob Knightbridge in the Harrow goal before striking the net only for a raised assistants flag for offside to chalk the effort off much to the bemusement of all and sundry in the white of United. Ten minutes later United had the ball in the Harrow net again and this time it did count, Jalloh raced away on the left wing, having cut inside he looked up to see Reece Cole advancing at the far post and his perfect centre was headed home by the United midfielder. Just four minutes later United had a second, this time it started with a Cole free-kick taken to the right of the area, his perfectly hit kick seeing Jerry Wiltshire rise highest to power home a header at the far post. Soon after United “got away” with one when a loose ball found Chukwu on the left and as Smith came out to meet him the striker lofted the ball over the United stopper only for it to bounce on top of the United crossbar and go over the top. The final five minutes of the first half saw more chances come and go. Cole and Wiltshire almost replicated the earlier goal but this time the defenders header was wide of the target and then at the other end a knock down in the United box found Billy Leonard who fired first time straight into Smith’s grateful arms. In stoppage time United could have had a third when Taylor Miles and Cole Brown combined down the right, the former firing across goal and wide of the far post and we had to settle for just the two in the opening 45. United came out of the blocks all guns blazing after the break, five minutes in Cole sent Roger James through on goal, Knightbridge blocked his effort as far as Emmanuel who saw his shot from a very acute angle turned away off the line by the Borough defence. On 55 minutes the Borough defence again cleared off the line, Jalloh was played through, rounded the ‘keeper only for his angled shot to be cleared off the line by Borough skipper Sam Adenola for a corner. The corner kick was met by Wiltshire, his downwards header was flicked on by Jalloh but Knightbridge got down well to push the ball away to safety. The 57th minute was to prove ultra pivotal as United scored a third and Borough were reduced to ten men before the game could restart. A corner from the right was flicked on to Emmanuel beyond the far post, he neatly took control of the ball before feeding it to Wiltshire who smashed home his second of the game and with the goal being awarded Harrow striker James Ewington must have spoken out of turn as referee Fadi Mansour showed him a straight red card. Just past the hour mark United virtually assured the trophy was theirs, James won possession in the Harrow half of the field and found Emmanuel who in true style turned towards goal and crashed a shot past Knightbridge from 12 yards to put United four ahead. United still pushed for another with little coming the other way from the ten men, Jalloh won the ball 30 yards from goal and fired inches over before James tried his luck from 25 yards only for his effort to be fumbled wide by Knightbridge. Skipper for the night Emmanuel finished the scoring off in stoppage time, Jamie Hanlon played a perfect ball over the Harrow defence, Emmanuel brought the ball down, turned and fired past Knightbridge to seal United’s first ever victory in the County Senior Cup.
